Dr. Yasmine Nachabe Taan is the chair of the Department of Design at LAU. She started teaching at LAU in 1994, and was instrumental in establishing the BA in Graphic Design program at LAU. From 2007 to 2010, Dr. Taan took a leave to continue her studies, whereby she earned her PhD in Art History and Communications Studies from McGill University. Her research focus is on design writing and research, visual culture and gender representation in early photographs in the Middle East. She has presented her research at conferences in the U.S. and Canada.
Dr. Taan also participated in a number of art residencies in Berlin, Beirut and Bratislava. Her artwork has been exhibited in New York, Berlin and Beirut. She is currently editing a special issue of al-Raida magazine on Women and Photography and preparing for a solo exhibition in April 2014. She is also currently writing a book on Hilmi el-Tuni, a renown Egyptian illustrator, to be published by the Khatt foundation in Amsterdam in June 2014. In addition to teaching and research, she illustrated more than twenty children’s books.
